Double-Sided Tape Guide: Foam, Acrylic High-Bond, Tissue, PET and Nano Gel

Six families of double-sided tape, what each carrier does, and how to match thickness, adhesive and liner to your parts.

Double-Sided Tape Guide: Foam, Acrylic High-Bond, Tissue, PET and Nano Gel
Key points

  • Thin carriers (tissue, PET) for flat, rigid parts; foam for uneven surfaces and vibration.
  • Acrylic foam is the choice for permanent, structural and outdoor bonds.
  • Specify the liner too — it matters for die-cutting and assembly speed.

Double-sided tape is really two adhesives held apart by a carrier — or no carrier at all. The carrier decides how the tape handles gaps, vibration and die-cutting. Our catalog groups them in double-sided and mounting tapes.

The six families

Type Carrier Best for
Foam mounting tape PE, EVA or PU foam, 0.5–3 mm Uneven surfaces, gap filling, signs, mirrors
Acrylic foam high-bond Solid acrylic foam Permanent structural bonds, outdoor
Tissue tape Non-woven tissue Paper, labels, foam lamination, conformable
PET tape Polyester film Precise die-cuts, electronics, nameplates
Transfer tape None (adhesive only) Thinnest bond line, graphics
Nano gel tape Clear gel Removable, washable household fixing

Choosing thickness

A bond only works where both adhesive faces touch. On flat glass, a 0.1 mm PET tape is enough. On a textured wall or a bowed panel, choose foam thick enough to bridge the gaps — often 1 mm or more.

Choosing the adhesive

Rubber for fast grab indoors; acrylic for heat, UV and long life (see adhesive chemistry). Some tapes have different adhesives on each side for bonding foam to metal or plastic to glass.

Don’t forget the liner

Paper liners are cheap and tear easily; film liners stay flat for automatic dispensing and precision die-cutting. Specify liner color if you sort parts by eye.

Frequently asked questions

What is the strongest double-sided tape?

Acrylic foam (VHB-type) tapes give the highest long-term strength and are used to bond panels, trims and signs in place of screws.

Which double-sided tape is removable?

Nano gel tapes and some low-tack PET tapes can be removed and repositioned; check the listing for “removable” or “reusable”.
